After seeing Simeon of psychedelic electronic pioneers Silver Apples performing in Glasgow for the second time in a few years we thought we should share this excellent documentary.
Thoroughly enjoyed the gig at Mono on Sunday 26th Feb and I treated myself to a lovely limited edition red Silver Apples compilation LP to mark the occassion. The set, part of the wider programme of events in the music strand of the Glasgow Film Festival, consisted of Simeon and his gizmos recreating slightly modern versions of the Silver Apples classics. The music before and after, supplied by the always surprising and more than pleasing sounds of James Pole were tremendously appropriate as well.
The documentary was shown during the Glasgow Film Festival and was produced by the excellent Blackburn based Media Centre who work in conjunction with The Saatchi Gallery Magazine Art And Music; and The Tate Liverpool and whose video productions are all produced by students at Blackburn College. Check out more of their video production on Vimeo.
Massive thanks to the very talented gentleman, Jamie Holman from Media Centre for the help with this one.
Here’s what Media Centre say about the film and what it covers:
From their origins in The Overland Stage through rediscovery, Portishead and chaos aesthetics. This three part interview and session with Simeon covers the fascinating history of the Silver Apples, genuine pioneers of electronic music. Tracks include – A Pox On You, Velvet Cave, Oscillations and Seagreen Serenade.
And finally here is how the producers, Media Centre, describe themselves:
The Media Centre at Blackburn College works in partnership with The Saatchi Gallery Magazine Art And Music and The Tate Gallery Liverpool; producing profiles, sessions and documentaries of both British and international bands, musicians, artists and exhibitions. All the films are produced, made and presented by Media and Art students on campus at Blackburn College, or on location across the country. Doing something is almost always better than doing nothing – get off your arses!
